A healthy person can lead a completely normal life with only one working kidney. In the past 10 years alone, more than 500 people in Scotland have transformed the lives of others and become living kidney donors. Now, almost half of all kidney donations come from living donors, which is fantastic news because living donor transplants lead to better results for patients.
In Scotland there are currently over 400 people on the transplant list in need of a kidney. The average wait for a kidney from a deceased donor is 3 years.
If you are considering donating a kidney to either a loved one/friend, or to a stranger (altruistic donation), we understand that you will have a lot of questions.
