The NHS Organ Donor Register is a confidential, computerised database that is used to help establish whether you want to donate your organs or not. And if you do, what organs you have specified for donation.
If you decide to leave a legacy of life for others, the NHS Organ Donor Register lets us know your choices, and you can then let those close to you know what you have decided.
Being on the NHS Organ Donor Register is the most permanent way of expressing your wishes. You will be sent a donor card when you join, but not everyone carries one at all times, and of course you may lose it.
That’s why, once you’ve joined , it’s important to make sure you let your relatives know your wishes, as ultimately it will be them that give permission for organ donation to proceed. Organs and tissue cannot be accepted unless they are freely donated. No conditions can be attached in terms of potential recipients.
The importance of organ donation can’t be stressed enough. Quite simply, you will be making a decision to save and transform lives in the event of your death. And if you are on the NHS Organ Donor Register, then healthcare professionals will know right away it was your wish to help others, and they can save valuable, potentially life-saving time.Yes I want to donate
If you feel that you do not want to donate, it’s just as important to register your decision so that your wishes are upheld in the future. And if you change your mind, you can always change your details later. No I’d rather not donate
