Welcome to the John Lynch Renal Unit, Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock

Living kidney donation referrals are accepted throughout Ayrshire & Arran. Recipients and donors are given a living donation information pack which includes a registration form, a health check questionnaire, a GP consent form and living donor information leaflets.  This pack has information on how donors can self-refer for a live donor assessment. These referrals can be received via phone call, letter or by email.

Once the registration forms are returned, a clinic visit will be arranged with the local Living Donor Transplant Co-ordinator for a detailed discussion, blood pressure check along with initial bloods and urine testing.  If multiple donors come forward, each donor is screened on the basis of their health questionnaire, blood group and tissue typing, each donor is discussed by the Living Donor Multidisciplinary Team.

Selected donors will then receive a clinic appointment for review by a Consultant Nephrologist, where further assessment and appropriate investigations are carried out locally. Each step of the process is co-ordinated and streamlined by our Renal Transplant Co-ordinators.  If the Nephrologist deems them a suitable donor, they will be referred on to the transplant unit in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.  The Living Donor Co-ordinators in QEUH co-ordinate renal imaging, isotope GFR (to check kidney function), surgical review, independent assessment, theatre dates and admission for the nephrectomy/transplant.

Living Donor Co-ordinators at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital monitor the donors at intervals for one year post op then they are referred to their GPs for annual monitoring – including blood tests, blood pressure, urine and general health assessment.  The recipients are monitored by the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital  transplant team then referred back to their local unit one year post transplant.
