Welcome to the Renal Unit at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness
Raigmore Hospital in Inverness accepts referrals from the Highlands and Western Isles; either via GP; renal team; the Living Donation Scotland Website or directly from potential donors. Usual practice is to send a health check questionnaire and GP contact consent, along with a living donor information pack. Arrangements will be made to take blood samples to see if there is a suitable match to the recipient. There are options to explore should there not be a suitable direct match.
The next step would be to see a Renal Consultant and the Transplant Liaison Nurse at Raigmore Hospital. They will discuss the donor process in more detail, take an in depth medical history and refer for the relevant tests. Some of the tests can only be done in Raigmore Hospital. However arrangements can be made for them to be done in one day or on separate days.
The potential donor is seen by a Transplant Surgeon from Edinburgh who does clinics in Inverness and will assess from a surgical perspective. The case will then be discussed with the multidisciplinary team in Edinburgh.
Part of the process involves an independent assessment. This is carried out by an Independent Assessor in Raigmore. This is a legal requirement for the donation to go ahead. It ensures that both the donor and recipient fully understand the process and that there is no coercion or financial incentive involved.
About six weeks after donation the donor is reviewed by the visiting Transplant Surgeon at Raigmore Hospital then followed up on an annual basis. This is to monitor kidney function, blood pressure and general health. The Transplant Liaison Nurse has clinics for donors in the Inverness and surrounding area. For donors outwith this area they will be reviewed in Wick, Fort William, Portree or Stornoway by one of the Raigmore Renal Nephrologists.
